Women’s DP1 – Saturday July 12, 2003
Vs QUT
Score: 3-0
We were wary of lowly QUT because they had drawn their last two games, including one against leaders Ascot. We started confidently, spreading the ball around up front and earning several penalty corners, with good shots saved or going marginally wide. Soon QUT started creating their own chances, with keeper Bridgit making an excellent and vital save after a shot deflected into the air off fullback Michelle’s stick. We weren’t using the switch of play effectively enough until Bec came at left half and spotted Jodie free at right wing. A brilliant crossfield pass from halfway found its target and Jodie streaked away into the circle and beat the keeper with a terrific shot. We would of gone up 2-0 if not for a great save off the line their halfback at a penalty corner.
In the second half we really started to dominate our opponents and created a heap of goal scoring chances. Tonya netted a double to take us to a three goal lead, although we should have had plenty more. Nadine hit the post from close range (granted it was a one-time hit from an acute angle!) and Danielle and Tonya would probably realise they should have done better with their chances. The passing up front was really good, with Becca, Nadine, Jess and Danielle linking up well on the left, and Jodie, Shanina and Brownyn providing good balls from the right side. Their attacks were fairly easy to handle, and we spread their defense well to create gaps on counter attacks. Late in the game we had some positional changes, with Kayley replacing Kym at centre half and Michelle playing in the forwards.
Good to score a win for the first time in six matches, and by passing the ball around and making them chase us we eventually wore down a team who probably had many members participate in the uni games all that week. We need to keep winning and pot goals against the lower opposition. With the race for the places in the finals so tight, goal difference may well determine where we finish. Although we didn’t score more goals in this match, nearly all of the shots that we did have went on target and forced the keeper and defenders to make saves. For the first time in weeks, our penalty corners looked dangerous and produced goals. Once again the umpiring was of a pretty good standard, and hopefully this trend continues. And this game was proof that we play better when we arrive on time and warm-up well!
