Women’s DP1 – Saturday May 3, 2003
Vs Commercial
Score: 1-2
A determined Commercial started the game strongly and camped themselves in our 25 yard zone for the first 10 minutes. Our defensive resilience was great with Kayley outstanding in preventing some dire circumstances and Nadine getting us out of the danger area with strong advances down the sideline. Poor marking allowed Commercial to score with a deflection from a free hit giving keeper Bridgit little chance. We worked our way into the game and the chances soon came, but Tonya hit the side netting and Shanina followed in a corner rebound but her shot was saved. When Jess K. came on at left wing, she formed short passing combinations with Tonya and Michelle that saw us stretching their defense.
Michelle found centre half Kym unmarked at the top of the circle, who slammed a shot that rattled the backboard to equalise. With one touch to take the ball into the circle, it was one the most sweetly hit shots the fans have seen. In the second half both sets of insides were dangerous in attack, but as the game wore on, the gaps opened up which saw the two teams playing longer balls for end-to-end hockey. Their winning goal was a dubious one, with a free hit outside the circle appearing to ricochet in off Julia’s leg, but with no touch from their stick. Funny how Commercial didn’t congratulate the “scorer” or celebrate regaining the lead! But they seemed the sharper and more determined side on the day.
An even contest with some high quality hockey played, and a match with some verbal and physical confrontation. It seems that the intense rivalry with Commercial from last year has carried on into this season. Although we lost the game, there was much to be happy with. We had two of our good players unavailable (have a good and speedy recovery Danielle!) but our DP2 fill-ins Jess, Lydia, Julia and Bec were great. We showed good tenacity, determination and patience, as we could easily have capitulated under their early pressure. One of our players remarked that they’re sick of losing, to which I can only say two things. Firstly, we’ve only lost two games this year. Secondly, the best solution would be to win this weekend!
