Match Report
Opposition: Kedron Wavell
Date: 2-Apr-2003
Time: 7:50
A bit of a struggle getting a team onto the park (how unusual). We had a surprise turn up of Craig Rowe and Colin Murphy who simply won't go to Belgium as promised. Barry turned up on time at the wrong field – we were playing Kedron Wavell Barry not at Kedron Wavell – as we get older we have hearing problems – just not certain who didn't hear. We didn't get a chance to run off any of his passes.....................................
1st half.
This game started off well with the tempo being pretty quick and no-one in particular dominating. Shane Carrol was kept quiet most of the time and when he had opportunities (as he always does) the close attention and excellent work by the keeper kept his shots going wide or closed him down altogether. Kedrons' keeper denied us the opening goal with a brilliant save from a corner. Towards the end of the half a couple of kicks and a high ball that went unnoticed resulted in us being caught on the wrong foot (expecting to get the free) and they scored a field goal. A little aggreaved at this we tried to pull the goal back immediately but often turned the ball over up front and Andrew still works on his ranging shots – enough already Andrew, you can start them towards the goal now. Poor choices and some poor teamwork saw us disposessed easily and we couldn't get a roll on. Our defence continued to be solid and we went into the break at 1 goal down.
The half time talked centred around their poor defence on their left with their half often pushing too high and leaving plenty of room for us to strike. They too noted this and our master plan was quickly stopped by them returning to the field playing a 4-3-3-1 formation and we failed to quickly adapt.
2nd Half
This half was played in two bits – the first bit saw our defence under enormous pressure and we continually failed to get the ball out of defence and when we did we forwards took the wrong options or got disposessed too easily. We started to get on top as their larger players tired and we started to get in behind them – we missed Darryls linking and ability to beat two players but we were still starting to pressure them. With three minutes to go Bruce, Wes and I were on the left post and fortunately it didn't fall to me and Bruce got the equaliser. 1-1 with less than 2 minutes to go. We wanted to immediately press for the win and so we screwed up a pass out of defence leading to a penatly corner which they slotted. Bugger. Finished the game down 1-2.
We really wanted to win this one for Steve (ex Kedron Wavell), Better luck next time I guess.
A good result would have been a draw. The umpiring was below standard but better than some I have seen (when I've been umpiring for example) and the match was played in good spirits and the after match postmortem was posiitve and got more positive by the beer (as they do).
I haven't told Andrew yet that the man that kept disposessing him was a keeper playing on the field as a fullback. Better hope he doesn't read this I guess. No offence meant to the keeper.
