Brisbane Square

Part of the redevelopment of Brisbane Square in Brisbane's CBD saw artscape introduced into the public space. Local artist, Donna Marcus was the awarded the task to create a series of sculptures that would be thought provoking, aesthetically pleasing and complement the site.

Donna's passion for nostalgia has led her to creating sculptures incorporating discarded, post-war aluminium kitchen vessels. In the second world war America temporarily stopped the manufacture of aluminium cookware and the English urged citizens to donate pots and pans to be used in the manufacture of war planes hence the slogan was coined - 'Saucepans to Spitfires'.

The overall concept was to create a number of 1.2 and 2.0 metre high soccer balls featuring old styled, triangular colanders that were once used to steam vegetables. The colanders holes would all have to be vented to allow the permeation of coloured light, steam and water.

Once the concept was finalised, Cheras worked with the customer to design the part and create 3D visual models before progressing onto the design and development of the necessary tooling. In all Cheras Industries supplied 9,000 of these cast aluminium steamers.

Circle on Cavill

G.James Glass & Aluminium is a leading supplier of curtain wall and high performance windows and doors. As part of the Circle on Cavill project, G.James were required to develop a architecturally pleasing and structurally sound system for fixing the balustrading to the balconies areas. In conjunction with Cheras Industries, a cast aluminium bracket was designed and engineered to secure the posts of the balustrade to the main concrete structure. The three dimensional form of a casting avoided the use of fabricated brackets and offered an efficient means of installation. The tooling and castings were all developed, engineered and manufactured in-house.
